A prodigious boxer, representing Britain he landed the amateur world featherweight crown defeating the Canadian champion in New York 1911, aged just 17. Considered to be one of most naturally gifted boxers of his generation, he left university to join the war effort with the Royal Scots Fusiliers, quickly rising to Captain, then took his fighting-spirit to the skies in Dec 1915 with the Royal Flying Corps (RFC).
